REVIEW: THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS AND US (MATTHEW 4:1-11)//BY: YAROGLAH DAMILOLA M.

Vol. 16.5.17
credit:google.com

The temptations of Our Lord Jesus Christ are based on these three things: lust of the flesh, pride of life and lust of the eyes.

A lot of times we find ourselves tempted of one thing or the other. Sometimes we fall, and other times we overcome. The truth is behind every temptation is a subtle devil with a motive. His motive might be hidden from us but he knows its long run cost if we are overcome by that temptation.
Our Lord Jesus Christ was tempted by the devil and His failure would have cost us our salvation but all thanks to God the Father who did not leave His Son for the sake of His love for us.

Part I: Led by the Spirit
We might wonder why the Spirit of God would lead Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
First, temptation is an examination to test your strengths and weaknesses for a journey or greater experience. The temptation of Jesus was just to confirm that he was ready for His ministry.
Secondly, He needed to have victory over the devil before He commenced His ministry. Just imagine that these temptations hadn’t happened at the beginning, the devil would have caused so much havoc during His ministry and Jesus would have to face rebuking the devil at every attempt to disrupt His work.

Part II: The Temptations
1 John 2:16 KJV
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world.
1 John 2:16 NLT
For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.

The temptations of Our Lord Jesus Christ are based on these three things: Lust of the flesh, Pride of life and Lust of the eyes.
A.        Lust of the Flesh
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. Matthew 4:2-3 KJV
This temptation was based on cravings for physical pleasure or needs. He was hungered, he needed to satisfy that need with food. The need for survival, food, money, clothing, shelter and even sex has made us target for temptation from the devil. For instance, being tempted with bribe at work to do unlawful things, to deal in illegal businesses just to survive, to sleep with a boss to get the job or promotion, etc.Doing things to meet our needs in a wrongful manner are the temptations of the Lust of the flesh.

B.                       Pride of Life
Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, if thou be the son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Matthew 4:5-6 KJV

Jesus knows His ability and His capacity. He had the power to do anything He wanted, He knows His authority as God in the flesh. He didn’t even need the angels to bear Him up if he jumped. But He didn’t show His powers just to prove the devil right. He did everything according to purpose and to the Glory of God. There are times we are tempted to show our abilities and possessions in a way that doesn’t glorify God but we should always reference God.
Look at the challenge, "if thou be the Son of God". The question is, doesn’t the devil know that Jesus is the Son of God? He sure knows and Jesus doesn’t need to prove Himself.
If you have a gift for instance, spiritual or ministerial or possession and achievements, there is no need to show off to boast or boost your ego. Everything you do must be to the glory of God.
As a child of God, when you minister in a congregation, and you are complimented for your performance, you should never forget that it is God who has done it and He would share His glory with no man or thing, therefore, give all the gory to God. It should be noted that the devil also knows the Scriptures and he can use it against you, you must therefore ask that the Holy Spirit give you an in depth understanding of the Scriptures so as not to fall and fail in life.

C.                       Lust of the eyes
Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Matthew 4:8-9 KJV

It is human nature to desire what they see. We see beautiful things that are not necessarily a need but we try to get them: From the mansions to the cars and other luxuries of life. The devil showed Jesus the glory of the world with the mind to get Him carried away with the desire for it and bow to him, but he was disappointed because the glory Jesus had and would get at the fulfilment of this purpose was greater. A lot of people would do anything to have the glory of this world that fades and end up losing an eternal glory. Many are in bondage today because of their cravings for what they see.  When you are tempted to bow and worship the devil for the glory of this world, remember the scripture that says, “…the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”(Romans 8:18 KJV)
If our Lord Jesus had bowed to the devil for the glory of this world, He would have lost everything, the authority and power (Philippians 2:9-11, Matthew 28:18, Revelation 5:12), But now, He has overcome for us, he endured the cross, despised the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2). Thank You Jesus!

Part III: It is written
Jesus said, “…the words I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life”. John 6:63KJV

For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and sprit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12KJV

For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven. Psalm 119:89KJV

… Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7KJV

The only language or weapon of resistance that the devil understands is the Word of God.
If God had said, he magnifies his Word above all his names, who then is the devil to resist the Word of God and not flee at His word. The Word of God is powerful; it’s a weapon of war in times of temptations. The Word of God is the key to conquer the devil at such times.
Our Lord Jesus Christ led by example and resisted the devil with the written Word of God. (Matthew 4:4,7&10) We must familiarise ourselves with the scriptures to help us in times of temptations. The Word of God is there to strengthen us and guide our footsteps at every step of the way through temptations.

In Conclusion, the victory has been won over Satan, it is left for us to tap into that grace to overcome as our Saviour has done at every point in time we find ourselves in one temptation or the other because the devil has not gone to sleep, but he is walking about seeking whom to devour (1Peter 5:8)
And don’t forget, James 1:13-15 KJV says,
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

MAY GOD HELP US! AMEN!!!

Knocking.....
Yes, please a minute! (Opening the door)
Mr. John asked; how may I be of help sir?  He replied, I am Stephen, hail from Jordan. Please do you have an idea as to the residence of Mr. Simon?
Mr. Simon is tall, fair in complexion, with gray hair, pointed nose and has the Roman type of feet. He is very quiet; never makes trouble. He loves people who are calm n gentle, but dislike those easily provoked. His wife's name is Jane, and they have four children; Samuel, Moses, Joshua and Martha He has…..... O yes! I get it just as you described, replied Mr. Stephen.  Thank you very much, now I know him better
From the illustration above, you will find out that knowing means clear description of something to someone. Clear in such a way that you ‘drive home’ your point so as to easily pass across your message. Thus, pass across knowledge is not complete until the receiver can understand what you are saying.
            THE PHYSICAL AND THE SPIRITUAL
Knowing God was derived from the combination of two words; knowing and God. The formal is of the physical since it has to do with our senses; our ability to perceive, recognize as well as to learn something which are subject to physical control. The later which is God is spiritual, for the bible says God is spirit.... (John 4:24). Also our God is present everywhere which is the unique feature of omnipresent; present in heaven and on earth at the same time (Deuteronomy. 4:39, Isaiah 66:1).The darkness shines as light to him (Psalms. 139:11-12) and no one can hide from his spirit (Psalms. 139:7) ,nothing hidden from Him, His spirit searches all these (1Corinthians. 2:10).
God is also omnipotent (the one who can do all things). Nothing is too hard or difficult for him to do. This can be seen from how he created the shapeless, void and formless state of the world to a good one (Genesis 1) He made all things and through him all things were made (Colossians 1:16). He formed us fearfully and wonderfully (Psalms. 139:14), making mankind filled with extraordinary features and qualities because you are created in God's image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). OH! My father! How great you are, lord, no one can fathom your greatness (Psalms 145:3). Even the seas and wave obeys His voice (Luke. 8:24). How mighty you're lord!
God is the all-powerful, He can do anything and no one can question Him (Psalms. 136:6), He removes mountains (Job 9:5). He is beyond the height of stars (Job 22:7) How big and strong is God! It is really good to know you lord! God is limitless, He takes different qualities at different time; He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and last, and in him there is no shadow of turning (James 1:16) Thus, you can't know God if you still remain in your physical state, the physical realm controlled by our self/flesh, which is the sinful nature.
      THE SINFUL NATURE
This is your fleshy nature or the carnal nature. It takes emptying ourselves of the physical nature (denying the flesh), crucifying the carnal nature which is liable to sin (Romans 6:6; Galatians 5:19), by putting off the old man (Ephesians. 4:22) and putting on the new (spirit-controlled) man (Ephesians. 4:23-24); being made renewed in our mind (Ephesians. 4:23).This renewal is done by God. He will cleanse us from every stain and purge us from every form of sin through the precious blood of our lord and savior Jesus Christ (Hebrews. 12:22-25); a Priceless possession that money cannot buy, accessible only by believing and accepting Jesus as lord and savior of your life. My dear, are you born again? Have you accepted Jesus as your lord and personal savior? Please, come to him now, open the door of your heart to him, he is waiting (Revelation 3:20). He loves you and died for you and me (For God so loved the world that he gave his only son- Jesus Christ, that whoso ever believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life (John.  3:16).
Jesus loves you very much and wants to take all your pains away. .For he says, cast all your cares upon me for I cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Please, answer His call today by saying this prayer:   Lord Jesus, I come before you today, I acknowledge that am a sinner, I confess, believe and accept you as lord and savior over my life, wash me with your blood that I may be white snow and write my name in the book of life. Thank you Jesus, in Jesus Name, Amen.
Congratulations dear brother and sister, heaven is very happy now, you can really know God now because His spirit is in you now, His spirit will help reveal him to you. Endeavor to join a bible believing church and keep growing in the grace of our lord Jesus Christ.

BOOK REVIEW: THE SECRET PLACE // BY: OPOMULO ABIMBOLA N.

Vol. 16.4.15

“……..I want to reveal to you the truth that the prophet saw. I desire to release my deeper revelation to my church. I have made all mankind because I desire companionship. That is the purpose of every man and woman on earth. Enoch discovered that his life was satisfying as long as he enjoyed communion with me (God)”. (Chapter 6, page 67).

What a beautiful and wonderful experience, as I journeyed with Dr. Dale Fife in this book, in his journey of intimacy with God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Every chapter opened released an electron flux into my spiritual system. My heart cries and yearns for more of God, to abide in His presence and never leave again. I found out that there is no place I will rather be than God’s secret place, to draw deeper from the well of His presence. The spirit of the lord engulfed me and I cried out Lord! Your church, this is what your church needs.

The body of Christ needs to thirst for the presence of God, to draw incredible insight from the depth of God’s wisdom. The author stressed the point that all believers everywhere should thirst for God’s intimacy; the body of Christ must be bound together with a common vision (Chapter13, pg179) which is to make ready people prepared for the Lord’s coming (Luke 1:17). Christ needs to be fully formed in the church (Colossians 1:25-29). He wants every man complete in him, a church without blemish or wrinkles. Obviously, the church is so engross in their affairs, yet all activities and aim seems so trivial and insignificant. They often resume their normal routine, neglecting the incredible treasures beyond it, which is exhorting one another (Hebrews 10:19-25). According to the author (Chapter 13 page 184-185), the Lord said this is how His church ought to function.

In chapter 12, (page: 167-169), the author described the church as a house of hospitality. Pastors tending to workers, gathering groups of people together at numerous places for encouragement and instruction. Teachers join the Pastors, impacting wisdom and understanding to the people. Cooperating with each other. Every person has a gift and calling from God (1 Corinthians 12:11). This ministry should be used to build and restore the church of God (Romans 12:6-8)

In Chapter 10, Dr. Fife through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit pointed out clearly that all form of ‘religion’ must be swept away in the body of Christ, it has sought to kill God's Spirit and flow, and it has impeded the flow of God’s presence. Religion is the trap set by the devil against the church for her to be stocked in the forest of deception. He described the forest of deceptions are the philosophies and the great ideas of mankind (Theology). Many dwelling places (church) have been fashioned by the hands of men. (Genesis 11:1-9). People built altars and worship this theological concept and never moved on to walk with God closely. (2 Corinthians 11:1-4). Many of Gods children have been deceived even by the very elect. (Matthew 6:23). Adam and Eve sought the truth outside God and they were trapped in the forest of deception. They sacrificed intimacy with God for knowledge and hide away from Him. It cost them their life; since then, death entered the world but thank God for Jesus that bought us life and more in abundance. There is a cordial relationship between sin and deception (1John 1:5-10). It is of importance that every sin committed must be quickly confessed. Forest of deception is a place every child of God must pass through (tribulations and trials) but getting through it depends on our intimacy with God and the level of dwelling in His presence.

Reading the mind of the author under Holy Spirit inspiration, intimacy with God starts with communication. (Chapter15, page 201-203). More of God’s word is a crucial aspect of closeness with God. (John 5: 39; 6:63; 68). Quoting the author, ‘so many people have tasted only from the well. "My son don’t be like those who come out and have their thirst quenched for the moment, draw deep, come further down the depth of my heart. (Romans 11:33, Ephesians 3:16-19). Oh my son I long to speak with all my children, how I desire to tell them of my love and mercy. There is an eternal river of my presence still available to those who will come and drink’.

Are you desperate to be in His presence? Are you longing for His presence? Intimacy with God is the next step in your spiritual journey and the key is opening your heart to taste of God’s presence and you’ll be hungry for more. The secret place (Passionately pursuing His presence) is the book that not only teaches but brings you into another realm of spirituality in which you draw from the well of deeper revelation from Gods presence.

Why not hurry and get your own copy and be filled with and in God’s presence

SPECIAL CONTRIBUTION: EASY ENTANGLEMENT //BY: ADETUNJI SOLOMON

                                                                                      Vol. 16.3.14

Easy entanglement has to do with being easily carried away by the things and ways of the world. Though we are in the world but not of the world, as such there should be a distinction between a Christian and the world. (John 17:14). The world has it ways/culture. What is acceptable in the world is not acceptable in our home (heaven). Therefore the devil uses his weapon of easy entanglement to bring Christians into bandage.

The weapon of entanglement could be anything that easily hold one back from moving forward or fast enough according to the initial speed present in the individual towards spiritual growth and it is called sin. The initial speed will decrease when entangled as a result of sin. Sin is the way of the world as that is what is acceptable to the world. Sin develops from little things considered to be irrelevant but soon becomes an unwanted weight that draws you back and slows you down in the Christian race. According to Hebrews 12:1, Paul enjoin Christians to lay (put) aside the sin that easily hold us back from running effectively the race set before us.

The sin that easily entangles us (i.e. the particular sin one can easily be tempted with) is particular to each individual, and varies from one individual to the other. It often start from a simple stage of allowing or entertaining evil suggestions from the devil or self to create a sinful desire for this particular sin which will lead to conception (just like pregnancy, it can actually be stopped by aborting or putting an end to further processing that enhances the growth), then the man processes what has been conceived (planning on how to carry out the evil thought) until it's fully matured (fully planned), this gives birth to sin (carrying out the plan) and after this is death (James 1:14-15).

As a Christian, instead of focusing on growing the spiritual life, if the above process is allowed, the attention would inadvertently be diverted to growing something that leads to the end of the life of God in us. 2Peter 2:20 (KJV) says;
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
Therefore, as Soldiers of Christ, who is in a battle with the devil and self, and ad an athlete running this Christian race, we shouldn't entangle ourselves with extra weight (of sin) that would endanger our lives and slow us down and prevent us from overcoming and winning the eternal prize awaiting us. Our purpose is to please the one who called us. (2 Timothy 2:4-5, Hebrew 12:1, 2 Corinthians 9:24-25)

WAY OUT OF ENTANGLEMENT
High Resistance: To resist the devil may not be easy as it is the weakness of the individual, so, there will be need to resist firmly, disallow and oppose the devil especially with the word of God and in the name of Jesus in prayers. (1Peter 5:9, Ephesians 6:13)

Pray Now: The best time to pray is now. This means to pray ahead before you are being tempted. Jesus prayed for Peter ahead of the time of his trial (Luke 22:32). Pray now that you should not be led into temptation (Mathew. 6:13).

Flee: Flee all appearances of evil, never wait, never try to listen, do not be interested, just flee (2Timothy. 2:22; I Thessalonians. 5:22).

Feed on God's word always: Your mind can never be vacant, it's always hungry for something, let your mind feed on the word of God not worldly movies, magazines, programs, chats and so on, that encourages your sinful urge; this increase the risk of being tempted. Increase and meditate in the knowledge of God and you shall find how easy it will be to lay aside the sin that easily entangles you. (2Timothy 2:15, 2Timothy 3:14-17)

Be Serious: there is need to let the devil know you are serious by exercising your authority in Christ, turning him down in every corner and focusing the whole of your attention on Jesus. Also, taking your personal relationship with God so seriously.

As we celebrate the death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ, we shouldn't let go of the reason for the season, the salvation of our souls (2 Thessalonians 5:9; Hebrews 5:7-9) and let's not forget to work out our salvation with fear and trembling through obedience and the grace of God will be sufficient for us. (Philippians 2:12). Therefore, let us hold on to the charge Hebrews 12: 1 (NIV):
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with patience the race marked out for us,”

SPIRITUAL HEALTH // BY: YAROGLAH DAMILOLA

                                                                                                                     Vol. 16.3.13

As Christians, when we gave our lives to Christ, at the place of conversion, we received a newness of spirit (2Corintians 5:17). This is the spirit that gives us the ability to have a relationship with God. It is the spirit that the Holy Spirit connects with, to bear witness that we are children of God (Romans 8:16). But when this spirit of ours is not in a good state (of health), there wouldn’t be a connection (1Corinthians 2:12-14). Can the spirit be sick, you ask? If our body is not given the adequate nutrition then it will be sick, so is the spirit. If the spirit is malnourished it will be sick. As health conscious people will give their body the necessary nutrition, exercise and rest to have a healthy body and also visit the Doctor for timely and thorough check up, follow prescription and advice, so also, we Christians ought to be conscious about our spiritual health. As health conscious people are conscious of the food they eat, the exercise of their body, the drugs they use and also all part of the body like the eyes, ears, heart, mouth, etc. Christians must be conscious of the food they feed their spirit, the exercise of their spirit, the use of drugs, the care of the eyes, ears, mouth as well as the heart.

What has these got to do with the spirit?
- The food you feed your spirit is the word of God. The word of God nourishes your spirit. As food is classified, so is the word of God classified, for doctrine, reprove, correction, and so on (
2Timothy 3:16). As Christians, we need the sincere milk of the word to grow (1Peter 2:2).
- Exercise makes you strong and healthy. When you eat to grow, you exercise to be strong and healthy. How then do you exercise your spirit? You being a doer of the word of God (
James 1:22). Being a
doer makes you more like Christ.
- Drugs are for different purposes, some for prevention, some for cure and some for supplement. The drug you give to your spirit is Prayer. Prayer is our means of communication to God. Your prayers can be for prevention of an evil occurrence, cure for an unfortunate incident or supplement for a deficiency such as something you are lacking. When you pray, your spirit is renewed and empowered. Prayer brings health to your spirit (
Luke 18:1).
- Take care of your eyes, ears, heart and mouth: Doctors will recommend Vitamin A for your eyes, warn against putting sharp object in the ears and Dentist will say brush your teeth twice daily to
prevent tooth decay and mouth odor, all these are part of staying healthy. But from the spiritual perspective, what you expose your eyes to will affect your spiritual health. What do you watch and what do you see. What you listen to will also affect your spiritual health, the music, messages, teaching you listen to, are they edifying (
1Corintians 10:23).
-Care for the heart: Doctors would advise, do not take too much salt, reduce your cholesterol intake, and don’t think too much; because of the heart. As the heart is essential to the body, so is it to the spirit, why? The heart is the engine room of every thought and action. Before you do anything good, you have thought about it, likewise, before you do anything bad. (Luke 6:45). The thought of your heart will either defile your spirit or edify it. Therefore, take care of your heart.
-The mouth (
Matt 15:11 KJV): Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. What do you say with your mouth? As the things you say affects your spiritual health. If out of your mouth still proceeds curse and blessing, your spirit it unhealthy (James 3:2-10). Let our conversation be edifying, full of grace, seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6, Ephesians 4:29). The things you see and hear develops into the thought of your heart, and your thought determines your word, what you alter with your mouth
-Lastly, stay away from germs to prevent you from sickness. The germs that can make your spirit sick is SIN, therefore, abstain (
1Tessalonians 5:22). The Bible called all unrighteousness, sin (1John 5:17). Sin feeds your flesh and starves your spirit thereby making it sick. Let us purify ourselves from everything that can defile our body and spirit (2Corinthians 7:1NLT).

Why we need to stay spiritually healthy

Since our relationship with God is depended on our spiritual health, we must pay attention to it as long as we are His children. We must remember that as citizens of heaven, we are here as pilgrims and on this journey we must remain connected to our home and our source which is our Father in heaven. Your spiritual health determines your spiritual growth. A healthy man is a growing man (1Peter 2:2) and we are running a race and only the spiritually healthy can run to the finish (1Corinthians 9:24-26). Also as a good soldiers of Christ (1Timothy 2:3), we need to be alert to the commander, to know when to go and when not to. The devil our greatest adversary is like a roaring lion seeking whom to devour, we therefore need to be alert, and stand firm against him.

How to be spiritually healthy
-Study and meditate on the word of God (
Joshua 1:8, 2Timothy 2:15)
-Live a holy life (
2Corinthians 7:1, 1Thessalonians 4:3)
-Live a prayerful life (
Colossians 4:2, 1Thessalonians 5:17).

Conclusion
If you want to be spiritually healthy, walk in the spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (
Galatians 5:16-21). For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh but they that are after the spirit, the things of the spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Romans 8:5-6). If you are not spiritually healthy, you can't have a good relationship with God (Romans 8:7-8).
